Our annual meeting will be on Sunday, November 13 at 2:00pm, at the First Unitarian Church of Cleveland, 21600 Shaker Blvd, Shaker Heights.
We are delighted to announce that the speaker at our annual meeting will be celebrity mortician, Caitlin Doughty, author of Smoke Gets in your Eyes. Doughty is a graduate of the University of Chicago. She is the star of a series of videos, Ask a Mortician, full of gothic humor and sensible advice, and she has an interesting website, Order of the Good Death. She is also on the Advisory Board of Compassion and Choices. After graduation, Doughty took a job operating a crematory in Southern California. The experience tempered her. “Surrounded by bodies, there is too much death for one person and not enough for all these other people who aren’t doing this.”
We love her philosophy and approach. In a New Yorker Profile, Nov. 30, 2015, she explained, “The conventional funeral industry has given people the impression that death is an emergency. But death is the opposite of an emergency. Look at the person who died; all the stress and pain is gone. And now, that stress and pain can be gone from you.”
